With college approaching fast, you might wonder how to add a school to FAFSA or change school codes on FAFSA if you decide to attend another university.

Ascent is here to help. Below is all the information you need on adding and changing schools on your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®).

How Do I Add a School to My FAFSA?

Adding a school to your FAFSA application is not that complicated.

  1. Go to the FAFSA website and log in with your ID.
  2. Select whether you are a parent or a student.
  3. On the “My FAFSA” page, select “Add/Change Schools, then select continue.
  4. Create a save key so you don’t lose your information if you get distracted. You’ll be happy you did when you meet the deadline for FAFSA.
  5. If you already know your school’s info, you can enter it. If not, enter the name/city of your prospective school in the search bar. The FAFSA website will present you with a list.
  6. Once your school is selected or you’ve entered the correct information, click submit.

Remember, you can have up to 10 schools in your account, which can be helpful if you’ve applied to more than one school.

Can I Add Another School After Submitting my FAFSA?

Yes, you can. You can list up to 10 schools in your account. You can also change your college if you’ve set your sights on a different school or program. Here’s how:

  1. Go to the FAFSA website and log in.
  2. Once logged in, select “Make FAFSA Corrections.”
  3. Go to the section where the colleges are listed. If you already have 10 schools listed, you’ll need to delete one. If not, you can go ahead and add the schools.
  4. Create a save key so you don’t lose your information if you get distracted.
  5. If you already know your school’s info, you can enter it. If not, enter the name/city of your prospective school in the search bar. The FAFSA website will present you with a list.
  6. Click submit. Then, check your email and mailbox to see if the FAFSA needs any additional information regarding the recently added schools.

How Do I Edit the Schools on My FAFSA?

You can edit the information on your FAFSA application by following the steps above.

Can I Delete a School on My FAFSA?

Yes, you can. Suppose you’ve added Northwestern, Columbia, Harvard, and Cornell to your application. But then you decided to add Yale and want to remove Harvard. You can log in and remove Harvard and replace it with Yale if you want, or you can keep both if your list has space for them.

How Many Schools Can Be Added to FAFSA?

Now that you know how to add a school to FAFSA, you might wonder how many you can add. Unfortunately, you can only have 10 schools on your FAFSA application at a time. The good news is that there’s a trick to adding more than 10.

You’ll receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) when you submit your FAFSA application. You can allow up to 10 schools to have access to that information. But how does it work, exactly?

Suppose you’ve added 10 schools to the FAFSA. After some research, you decide to swap out Kean University for Montclair State University. Even though you’ve fully deleted Kean’s info on your FAFSA application, Kean won’t delete the SAR information it gathered from you.

Now you’re free to add another school! While the college you removed won’t delete the information gathered from you, it won’t get information updates. Only delete schools from your FAFSA when you’re sure you won’t be attending that school year.
